Synopsis:
This book is a tactical guide to overcoming the paralysis of perfectionism. Its core idea is simple but life-altering: Success doesn't require a perfect plan; it requires beating back the voice of fear just long enough to start.
Once you start, keep going. Acuff maps the predictable stages of any goal (from "Uninformed Optimism" to "Informed Pessimism") so you can see your hesitation for what it is—a light that might be red for a couple minutes but it’s gonna turn green, so gear up to GO!
The One Takeaway:
The enemy isn't failure; it's average. The goal isn't to never be afraid; it's to learn to punch fear in the face Monday morning and start anyway.
Best For:
Anyone stuck in paralysis-by-analysis, terrified to launch their side hustle, switch careers, or make a pivotal financial decision.
What I Got Out of the Book:
Self Doubt has a limited script. All it’s programmed to say is, “No, no, don’t try. You’re not good enough. It won’t work.” I mean that for real. So imagine you want to do something new. We’ll use Go Right as an example.
Picture Self Doubt as a Disney-style old witch. She’s hunchbacked, wearing dirty, raggedy clothing, musty shoes, stinky breath, a huge wart on her nose with a hair growing out of it. Her right eye is milky white with cataracts, and her fingers are gnarled. Picture her like that.
Self Doubt is stooped over in the corner of your mind, whispering in your head.
She says, “No, don’t go right. You’re not good enough and it won’t make any difference.”
“OK, so what if I Go Left?”
Self Doubt’s response is, “No, don’t go left. You’re not good enough and it won’t make any difference.”
“Ah, so what if I Go Up?”
“No, don’t go up. You’re not good enough and it won’t make any difference.”
“Hmm, what if I Go Down and dig a tunnel around my problem?”
“No, don’t go down. You’re not good enough and it won’t make any difference.”
I think you’re getting the idea. Self Doubt is a bitter, old shrew set on auto pilot.
Acuff uses his own example of Self Doubt’s scripted responses. He broke it down with unassailable logic. If doing A won’t work and doing B won’t work and doing C won’t work, there HAS TO BE some action that WILL work.
What if Self Doubt is simply uninformed about what you’re capable of achieving?
How will you ever know what you’re capable of achieving if you don’t get up, START, try, and practice? This book is a swift kick in the ass to do enough to find out. Just prove it to yourself that you can, at the very least, lift a finger in your own best interest. Your happiness is worth your best effort. That almost always means shunting Self Doubt to the Time Out corner. Ignore that voice. It taunts every top performing achiever you can imagine.
