I was living in Brooklyn, working Downtown Manhattan, and poised to take a new job back in Midtown inside a staffing agency. For the first time, I had mental space to look beyond the next payment.

There was a bank branch inside the Key Food grocery store. I’d developed a friendly rapport with Sal, the branch manager. We used to chat it up about investing, the S&P 500, and his new baby boy. One day, I asked him about Traditional and Roth IRAs.

He said I could open either one right there at the branch.

My eyes lit up. "Let's do it," I said.

His eyes lit up too, glancing at the photo of his infant son on his desk. Then I pulled a twenty-dollar bill from my wallet.

Sal froze, eyebrows arched.

Hey, whatever, right? I had twenty dollars, and I wanted to open a Roth IRA. That was that. He took the money, we filled out the paperwork, and I walked out with an account.

Every week after, as my debt shrank, I added twenty dollars to my Roth. It wasn't a line item in some budget. It was a ritual - my ritual - of becoming the kind of woman who invests in her future.

The Math That Doesn't Lie

A lot of people don't like arithmetic. But numbers don't bullshit us.

  • Distance is measured numerically.

  • Time is measured numerically.

  • Money is measured numerically.

Arithmetic - Your NO BS Friend

If the inputs are honest, the output is naked truth. No tricks. If you add $20 every week to a savings account, in 52 weeks you absolutely will have $1,040 (plus interest). Math is loyal. It always works.

This is the core of Joyful Rising: you don't need a grand plan or a windfall. You need a true starting point and a true direction.

Maybe you start from an advantage. Maybe, like I did, you start from a hole. It doesn't matter. 20 x 52 will always equal 1,040.

Your starting amount is irrelevant. Your consistency is everything.

The Vector Framework

That $20 bill wasn't a deposit. It was a vector—a force with a direction. I was pointing my money toward a future where it would grow for me.

To find your vector, ask:

Direction: What is one account that grows for Future You? (e.g., Roth IRA, 401(k), a brokerage account, a high-yield savings account).

Force: What is one number you can move there every week, starting THIS week, without fail? (e.g., $50, $20, $5, 1% of your paycheck).

Ritual: When will you do it? (e.g., "Every Friday after I get my coffee.").

That's it. Direction. Force. Ritual.

Your Mission & The $20 Question

What is your "$20 move"?

It is not about the amount. It is about the first, tangible action that declares, "I am now building."

Hit reply and complete this sentence:

"My $20 move is to start putting [AMOUNT] into my [ACCOUNT] every [TIMEFRAME]."

Examples:

"My $20 move is to start putting $10 into my Acorns account every Monday."

"My $20 move is to increase my 401(k) contribution by 1% this pay period."

Just name it. This makes it real. I'll read every one.

To rising joyfully,

April

P.S. You don't need a Sal. You can open a Roth IRA in about 15 minutes online with providers like Fidelity. They won't blink at a $20 bill—they'll celebrate it.
